Christy Pilkinton’s workshop format includes demonstrations in oil and pastel, color, study of the Old Masters, professional portrait procedure, posing and lighting of models, choosing painting positions, arrangement of materials and easel, canvas preparation. She also covers methods of painting (masses, values, color, texture, etc.), methods of observing and understanding color, color mixing in oil & its application to pastel, portrait palettes of the Old Masters and Impressionists revealed, professional portrait artist’s palette explained and discussed. Pastel instruction included mastering pastels, choice of materials, types of surfaces, techniques, framing, composition, pricing, working from photographs, promotion and critique of artists work.

As an artist in the Nashville, Tennessee area, I am currently accepting commissions for portraits, still life and landscape paintings. You will find a variety of samples on the website in the portfolio section, from pencil sketches to full-length oil portraits.

I teach classes for beginner to advanced level students. My classes are very comfortable and encouraging while spurring students on to their highest potential. Students will be working at their own pace and may choose to work in pencil, charcoal, pastel or oil.

Portraits are my passion and portraiture is where I have devoted most of my study. However in portrait painting you must also be able to paint backgrounds, which includes landscape and still life. Therefore, I have studied other venues as well and include these in my classes.

Daniel Greene is one of America’s leading portrait painters and pastel artists. Christine was privileged to study under Daniel Greene from 1996 to 2000 and accumulated over 225 hours under his instruction in both Nashville and New York Studios. I will conduct spring and fall workshops and will post schedules and information on these periodically. Having studied with master artists such as Daniel Greene & Igor Babailov, I am willing to pass on techniques and methods of painting that date back to masters like John Singer Sargent and Auguste Renoir.
